প্রাচীন রোমে গণনার জন্য নুড়ি ব্যবহার করা হত। রোমান ভাষায় নুড়িকে বলা হয় ক্যালকুলি। ক্যালকুলি শব্দ থেকে ইংরেজি ক্যালকুলেট শব্দের উৎপত্তি।  ১৬৭১ সালে জার্মান গণিতবিদ গটফ্রাইড  ভন লিবনিজ (Gottfried  Von Leibnitz ) সিলিন্ডার আকৃতি বিশিষ্ট গিয়ার ব্যবহার করে একটি যান্ত্রিক ক্যালকুলেটর তৈরী করেন।  এটি বিশ্বের প্রথম যান্ত্রিক ক্যালকুলেটর। "Stepped Reckoner " নামে পরিচিত এই হিসাবযন্ত্রটির সাহায্যে পৌণঃ পুনিক যোগ,গুন  এবং ভাগ করা যায়।  ১৮২০ সালে ফ্রান্সের টমাস দ্য কলমার লিবনিজের যন্ত্রের অনুরূপ " টমাস এরিথোমিটার " নামক যন্ত্র তৈরী করেন।  এটি ছিল সর্বপ্রথম বাণিজ্যিক হস্তচালিত ক্যালকুলেটর।
