ক্যামব্রিজ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের গণিতের অধ্যাপক স্যার চার্লস ব্যাবেজ ১৮২২ সালে ' ডিফারেন্স ইঞ্জিন ' আবিষ্কার করেন।  ১৮৩৩ সালে  তিনি ' এনালিটিক্যাল ইঞ্জিন ' নামক একটি যান্ত্রিক কম্পিউটার তৈরীর পরিকল্পনা গ্রহণ করেন এবং নক্সা করেন।  তিনি এ নিয়ে মৃত্যুর আগ পর্যন্ত গবেষণা চালিয়ে যান। ব্যাবেজের এনালিটিক্যাল ইঞ্জিনের পরিকল্পনায় আধুনিক কম্পিউটারের বৈশিষ্ট্য ছিল।  এজন্য ব্যাবেজকে কম্পিউটারের জনক বলা হয়।
